First things first, right? Think about the sort of story you'd like to tell. Modern, cyber-punk like William Gibson or Snowcrash? Fantasy like Tolkien or Robert Jordan? Medieval knights and ladies like something out of the Arthur legends?
Once you have the sort of story you'd like to tell concrete in your mind, it's time to create a character. Again, you have plenty of choices. Male or female? Good or evil? Skilled swordsman or bumbling sorceror's apprentice? When you've picked your character type, it's time to start fleshing him or her out. What does she look like? What skills does he have? Is she married with children? Is he an orphan? What motivates him to act the way he does? What does she want most in life? The more you know about your character, the more real he or she will become and the more fun you'll have playing.
When your character is perfected, it's time to take him or her for a spin. Write up an introductory post, lurk in our chat room for awhile, or just jump in and try it out. But always remember the Only Rule of FFRP - respect. Respect for your fellow writers and other characters, respect for their stories and settings, and respect for the community.
Once you've tried it out a couple of times, we're pretty sure you'll be hooked and want to come back for more advanced play opportunities. Always be on the look out for news that your character can use in your stories and if you see a plot on the message boards that you like, be sure to let the writers know! There's bound to be an opportunity to join in!
